Overview

Based on the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (and following a series of financial abuses in 1972 and its amendment in 1974), the Federal Election Commission was established as an independent agency for supervising and disclosing the federal financial campaign process as well as the limits on contributions by individuals, political parties and political action committees (PACs).
